If you are like me, you get really excited when you see a hummingbird. It is so rare around here that it is such a treat. You also probably know that their name comes from the sound their wings make beating together when they fly. But, what you might not know is what you can plant to try and attract them to your garden.
Hummingbirds notice shades of red more distinctly than any other color. That is why on many man made hummingbird feeders there is red right where the hummingbird will feed from. Their beaks are long and thin which helps them access the nextar in a flower. This means that the flowers they will feed from are mostly long and tubular. There are many different flowers that hummingbirds will drink from, but here are a few examples of plants we have. Take note of the colors and shapes of the flowers.
Lantana
Salvia
Petunia
Other plants you can use are Hollyhock, Larkspur, Honeysuckle, Wax Begonias, and Dianthus.
Hummingbirds are also very territorial so make sure you have a lot of room for them if you want to attract more than one. The are creatures of habit and will go back to the same feeding place every time. Also, they will fight each other over food. They will make a kind of cackling sound when they are fighting.
This just gives you a few examples of the many different plants that attract hummingbirds. Come visit our store for a complete list and many other plants.
